Rain moving through today, with a firm NNW blow as pressure builds. Give shallow cover and weed edges the first hour at Berg Lake. Not a day the forecast likes; the evening keeps a flicker of interest. One good spot fished well beats five fished quickly. The season of moving fish: stay mobile and watch for bait.

Look for Berg Lake in the Polk County part of Minnesota. Country round the bank runs to lake country bush. With some 60 acres of water, there is room for a boat but no need of one. A shoreline of some 1.1 miles keeps the choices simple. The nearest place of any size is Fosston, 12 miles away. The big place round here is Fargo, 72 miles distant. It sits well inside the county, so one set of rules covers it.
Nothing we hold settles how deep this runs. Bays and points beat straight shoreline every time on water like this. Look for the band where the shallows give up and the bottom falls away. Polk County records list yellow perch, brown bullhead, white sucker and northern pike among the fish reported. What holds for the county may not hold for this water. Berg Lake repays a walk before the first cast.
Climate records put July near 68°F and January near 4°F. Fishing here follows the temperature more than the calendar. Ice-out usually falls in mid April, and the weeks after it fish hardest. Ice usually gives way near mid April, and forms again about mid November. Just after the ice goes and just before it returns, the fishing lifts. The season on Berg Lake rarely departs from it.
The access position is unclear from public sources. This is a natural basin, not a dammed one. Beito WPA runs up to the bank here, which usually means extra restrictions. A wire trace and a big bright lure handle the pike; deep water asks for a heavier spoon. Season dates differ by species, so read the table. Some stretches are reserved and marked as such on the ground. If the gate is shut, Brokke Lake at 0.9 miles is the nearest alternative. Confirm access to Berg Lake locally before you travel.
