Cloud from horizon to horizon today, with the surface near flat and the barometer heading up. Expect most activity at Bass Lake around any hard bottom among the soft. The strongest window runs from the day. Stay mobile and follow the activity. Autumn fish are feeding up and less fussy than in summer.

Set in Aitkin County, Minnesota, this is Bass Lake. It stands 1,220 feet above sea level. Surface area is around 57 acres, which gives you real water without needing a boat. The edge runs 1.3 miles or so, easy to work in an afternoon. The closest town, Aitkin, is 17 miles distant. Further out sit Crosby (30 miles) and Moose Lake (31 miles). It sits well inside its county, with no border complications.
Depth is not on record here, so the bank has to tell you. Weed, then depth: that is the order to fish a water of this kind. Still water like this holds fish on the edges rather than out in the open. County-wide records name northern pike, bluegill and yellow perch. Take it as the county picture rather than a promise for this water. Bass Lake responds to conditions more than to tactics.
Long-term averages put July at about 68°F and January near 6°F. Winter puts a hard lid on this one. Once it clears, about mid April, the fishing comes on quickly. Open water usually runs from mid April until about late November. The open run goes from the thaw to the freeze, and April through October covers most of it. Expect Bass Lake to follow that timing.
Our records carry no access rule either way. It formed naturally, so levels move with rainfall rather than with a gate. Nothing in the way of made access shows up nearby: no ramp, no car park, no path. For the bass here, soft plastics worked slow along cover and a spinnerbait for searching do most of the work. Gates get locked out of season on water like this. Barbless rules turn up on managed water more often than not. If the gate is shut, Rock Lake at 1.1 miles is the nearest alternative. For Bass Lake in particular, ask before you travel.
