Flat light and a covered sky today, with light air out of the ESE and a falling glass. Fish at Back Lake should hold close to the first drop-off and weed lines. The useful hours run afternoon into evening. Stay patient; middling days often turn late. Falling temperatures are switching fish back on.

Back Lake lies in Otter Tail County, in Minnesota. The surroundings are lake country bush. With some 87 acres of water, there is room for a boat but no need of one. Around 1.8 miles of margin, front to back. Supplies mean a trip to Fergus Falls, 12 miles off. Further out sit Elbow Lake (15 miles) and Parkers Prairie (26 miles). It sits well inside its county, with no border complications.
Without a survey to go on, judge depth from how the bank falls away. Bays and points beat straight shoreline every time on water like this. Weed, then depth: that is the order to fish a water of this kind. Across Otter Tail County, recorded fish include largemouth bass, black crappie, walleye, bluegill and yellow perch. Species recorded across the county may be limited to a few waters. Back Lake responds to conditions more than to tactics.
Long-term averages put July at about 70°F and January near 7°F. Spring and autumn carry the fishing; summer and winter test it. The freeze runs deep into the year, with break-up near mid April. Going by climate averages, expect open water from about mid April until roughly late November. Fish feed hardest at the start and the close of the open season. Back Lake runs to its own calendar within the local pattern.
No access rule appears in what we hold. It formed naturally, so levels move with rainfall rather than with a gate. The map shows no ramp or car park nearby, so this is a walk-in water. For the bass here, soft plastics worked slow along cover and a spinnerbait for searching do most of the work. Take the rules with you rather than trusting memory. Fishing rules and camping rules are set separately here. Hanson Lake sits 0.4 miles off and takes the overflow. What applies at Back Lake may have changed since it was mapped.
