No direct sun expected today, with a faint NW drift with the barometer flat. Fish at Ask Lake should hold close to the shallows early and the drop later. The evening should out-fish the rest of the day. Take the steady approach over the searching one. Shortening days concentrate the feeding into fewer hours.

Ask Lake lies in Grant County, Minnesota. The water sits 1,211 feet up. With some 63 acres of water, there is room for a boat but no need of one. The full circuit measures close to 1.7 miles on foot. Elbow Lake lies 11 miles from the water. Fargo sits 72 miles out, and it is the nearest city worth the name. A county line runs close by, so local bylaws can differ within a short drive.
No figure exists for depth, so let the water show you. Bays and points beat straight shoreline every time on water like this. Read the surface for the wind lane, then fish the edge of it. Reported across Grant County: common carp, largemouth bass, walleye and bluegill. County records show the wider picture rather than this one place. The near bank of Ask Lake is often the one people ignore.
Between January at about 8°F and July at about 70°F, the water has a wide range to work through. A full turn of seasons, with the strongest sport on either side of summer. The freeze runs deep into the year, with break-up near mid April. Expect the water usable from around mid April until roughly late November. Right after break-up, and again as the nights sharpen, is when to go. The season on Ask Lake rarely departs from it.
No access rule appears in what we hold. This is a natural basin, not a dammed one. Access is unmapped, which usually means a farm track and a walk. For the bass here, soft plastics worked slow along cover and a spinnerbait for searching do most of the work. Look for a notice board at the entrance. Keep proof of licence with you rather than in the car. Failing this one, try Little Lake, 0.9 miles away. Confirm before you fish Ask Lake.
