No direct sun expected today, with flat calm through the day and the barometer heading up. The fish at Amber Lake are likely to sit near the first drop-off and weed lines. The day fishes best from morning through afternoon. Fish confidently and change only when the bites stop. The pre-winter feed makes autumn days generous.

Amber Lake is a Martin County water, Minnesota side. It lies 1,152 feet above sea level. It runs to roughly 180 acres — big enough to hold fish away from the bank, small enough to learn. Roughly 2.1 miles of bank means you can walk to a fresh area when one goes quiet. Fairmont sits 3.2 miles from here and is the nearest stop. After that come Sherburn at 13 miles and Truman at 15 miles. The county line is nowhere near, so one local authority covers the water.
The charted maximum sits at about 19 feet. Look for the band where the shallows give up and the bottom falls away. Weed, then depth: that is the order to fish a water of this kind. Martin County records list common carp, yellow perch and black bullhead among the fish reported. The county figures include rivers and lakes alike. On Amber Lake the first feature you find is usually worth a session.
Temperature averages peak at 72°F in July and bottom out at 13°F in January. The season turns properly here, and fish follow it closely. Ice-out usually falls in early April, and the weeks after it fish hardest. Break-up near early April, freeze-up near early December: that is the shape of an average year. The open run goes from the thaw to the freeze, and April through October covers most of it. Time your trip to Amber Lake by conditions rather than dates.
Ownership and access are not documented in what we hold. This is a natural basin, not a dammed one. There is a toilet block some half a mile out. Walleye come to jigs worked slow near bottom, and to trolled crankbaits along the drops at dusk. Ask in the nearest town if you are unsure. Barbless rules turn up on managed water more often than not. Should this one be busy, Hall Lake is 1.1 miles off. Nothing on Amber Lake should be assumed from this page alone.
