Clear air and long views across the water tonight, with enough S wind to stack food downwind with the barometer flat. Give windblown banks where food collects the first hour at Sand Lake. The useful hours run night into morning. Trust the forecast and stay out through the window. Falling temperatures are switching fish back on.

Sand Lake is a Manistee County water, Michigan side. Beyond the shoreline you have rolling bush. It runs to roughly 53 acres — big enough to hold fish away from the bank, small enough to learn. Bank access stretches around 1.1 miles in total. For a base, Baldwin sits 19 miles out. It is 84 miles to Grand Rapids, the nearest city. Local rules may differ a few miles either side of here.
Nothing we hold settles how deep this runs. Look for the band where the shallows give up and the bottom falls away. Weed, then depth: that is the order to fish a water of this kind. Manistee County records list alewife, rainbow smelt, bloater and johnny darter among the fish reported. County data is a starting point rather than a guarantee. At Sand Lake the water rewards a slow, careful approach.
The range across the year is 20°F to 68°F. A hard winter is normal, and the thaw brings a strong few weeks. The lid arrives early and lasts until roughly early April. Ice clears near early April and comes back about mid December in a typical year. Late spring and early autumn carry the year between them. Keep it in mind when planning a trip to Sand Lake.
Whether the bank is open is not something our records settle. Records list it as a natural water body rather than an impoundment. There is a slipway on the shore, half a mile from the water we list. A car park lies half a mile away, so the walk in is short. A campsite lies half a mile away for anyone staying over. Somewhere to sit and eat is half a mile out. Check whether bait restrictions apply before you buy any. Midget Lake, 0.4 miles away, makes the obvious fallback. Confirm access to Sand Lake locally before you travel.
