A clean, cloudless night over the water, with a faint WSW drift with the glass on the way up. The water to cover at Powell Lake is inflow corners and shaded margins. The evening should out-fish the rest of the day. Push the good hours hard and rest through the dead ones. Shortening days concentrate the feeding into fewer hours.

Powell Lake sits in Oakland County, out in Michigan. The ground round it is pine and birch. Roughly 26 acres: a morning covers one end, an afternoon the other. The whole outline is near 0.9 miles, and most of it is walkable. Oxford lies 0.9 miles from the water. Sterling Heights is the closest city, 21 miles away. The nearest boundary is a fair way off.
Nothing we hold settles how deep this runs. Read the surface for the wind lane, then fish the edge of it. This is a lake, so the margins and the first drop matter most. Species logged across Oakland County include bluegill, black crappie, largemouth bass and yellow perch. County records show the wider picture rather than this one place. On Powell Lake the quiet end is the one worth the extra effort.
Long-run averages give July about 70°F and January about 22°F. Fishing here follows the temperature more than the calendar. The lid usually sets by midwinter and gives way around early April. Averages suggest open water from about early April through to roughly mid December. Fish feed hardest at the start and the close of the open season. Anyone fishing Powell Lake regularly works to that calendar.
Our records carry no access rule either way. It formed naturally, so levels move with rainfall rather than with a gate. You can park half a mile away and walk in from there. A platform or pier sits within half a mile. A small crankbait along the drop and a worm in the thick stuff cover the bass. Where the road in crosses private land, ask first. Some stretches are reserved and marked as such on the ground. Spring Lake, 0.6 miles away, makes the obvious fallback. For Powell Lake, the notice at the access point is the final word.
