Cloud from horizon to horizon today, with a persistent wind from the WNW as pressure slides. Most of the action on Papoose Lake should come off the weed line and any gaps in it. The strongest window runs from the day. Stay mobile and follow the activity. Fish follow the bait in autumn, so find one to find the other.

Out in Houghton County, Michigan, sits Papoose Lake. The setting is pine and birch on every side. The water covers some 37 acres, so pick a bank rather than trying to cover it all. The bank runs about 1.1 miles all the way round, so one visit can cover most of it. By elevation it is in the upper part of our Michigan listings. Some 21 miles away sits Iron River, the nearest settlement. Green Bay is the closest city, 134 miles away. This one is safely inside the county line.
Nothing we hold settles how deep this runs. Read the surface for the wind lane, then fish the edge of it. Bays and points beat straight shoreline every time on water like this. Across Houghton County, recorded fish include rainbow smelt, bloater, cisco, yellow perch and lake whitefish. Records at county level tell you what is around, not what is stocked here. Papoose Lake fishes better once you know its edges.
Average temperature peaks around 64°F in July and bottoms out near 10°F in January. The year splits cleanly: hard water, then open water. Hard cover is dependable here; it goes around late April. Averages suggest open water from about late April through to roughly late November. Right after break-up, and again as the nights sharpen, is when to go. On Papoose Lake the same rules apply, with local timing.
Our records carry no access rule either way. Records list it as a natural water body rather than an impoundment. Mapping shows no built access close by; expect to walk in from wherever you can leave the car. Read any posted signs at the access point rather than assuming. A polite question at the farm gate opens more banks than anything else. For a change of water, Chamberlain Lake is 1.1 miles distant. Where Papoose Lake is concerned, a local answer beats a written one.
