Soft grey light all day today, with a steady W wind with the glass on the way up. Give windblown banks where food collects the first hour at Otsego Lake. The day runs flat but workable from start to finish. Take the steady approach over the searching one. Autumn rewards covering water while the fish roam.

The Otsego County end of Michigan holds Otsego Lake. It sits in rolling bush country. Roughly 3.1 sq miles of surface: treat each bay as a water in its own right. Around 12 miles of bank, which is a long day on foot. It is the biggest water on our Otsego County list. Gaylord sits 5.3 miles from the bank. Further out sit Mancelona (18 miles) and Lewiston (20 miles). The nearest boundary is a fair way off.
Depth remains unrecorded, so treat the first session as a survey. Read the surface for the wind lane, then fish the edge of it. The shallow end warms first and pulls fish in ahead of the rest. Fish documented in Otsego County include rock bass, white sucker and largemouth bass. The county figures include rivers and lakes alike. Fish Otsego Lake to its features, not to its size.
Expect July near 67°F and January near 17°F on the long-run figures. Winter puts a hard lid on this one. Count on hard cover from midwinter, and open water from mid April. Open water usually runs from mid April until about early December. Right after break-up, and again as the nights sharpen, is when to go. Otsego Lake runs to its own calendar within the local pattern.
Whether you may fish here is not something records settle. This is a natural basin, not a dammed one. No launch point is recorded nearby, so this is a bank water unless you carry a boat in. For the bass here, soft plastics worked slow along cover and a spinnerbait for searching do most of the work. Where a permit is needed, the nearest town usually sells it. Some stretches are reserved and marked as such on the ground. Failing this one, try Loon Lake, 1.5 miles away. Treat Otsego Lake as unsettled until someone local tells you otherwise.
