A sharp, clear morning turning into a bright day, with next to no ripple with the glass slipping lower. The productive water at Nichols Lake will be around points where shallow meets deep. Expect the better fishing from afternoon into evening. Work fewer spots, but work them properly.

Nichols Lake lies within the bounds of Genesee County, Michigan. What surrounds it is lake country bush. The water measures roughly 8 acres, so nothing here is far from anything else. On size it sits at the modest end of our Genesee County list. Fenton lies 1.7 miles from the water. The big place round here is Sterling Heights, 37 miles distant. The boundary is close enough to be worth checking before you fish.
No figure exists for depth, so let the water show you. Read the surface for the wind lane, then fish the edge of it. A natural lake fishes on cover, and cover here means weed and timber. Fish documented in Genesee County include bluegill, largemouth bass, pink salmon, black crappie and common carp. Those are county-wide records, so not every one of them will be in this water. Nichols Lake fishes better once you know its edges.
Between January at about 22°F and July at about 70°F, the water has a wide range to work through. A solid cap is the normal state through winter. Count on hard cover from midwinter, and open water from early April. The season between ice runs from about early April to mid December. Fish feed hardest at the start and the close of the open season. Anyone fishing Nichols Lake regularly works to that calendar.
Our records carry no access rule either way. A boat ramp sits 0.9 miles away, so trailered boats can get on. Fishing from a pier is possible half a mile away. There are picnic tables recorded roughly half a mile off. Facilities include toilets around half a mile from here. Where the road in crosses private land, ask first. Some ground is open by custom rather than by right, so tread carefully. Petts Lake at 0.6 miles is the sensible second choice. Nothing on Nichols Lake should be assumed from this page alone.
