Scattered cloud dimming the moonlight, with a persistent wind from the WNW with a firming glass. Fish at Mud Lake should hold close to structure within a cast of the bank. The useful hours run night into morning. Stay patient; middling days often turn late. Fish follow the bait in autumn, so find one to find the other.

Otsego County, Michigan, is where Mud Lake sits. Land around it is rolling bush. About 13 acres of surface, which puts the far bank inside easy sight. Gaylord lies 14 miles from the water. Indian River follows at 16 miles, then Lewiston at 23 miles. The county line runs close by, so rules can change within a short drive. Access points are few, so the middle stretches see little traffic.
Depth remains unrecorded, so treat the first session as a survey. Look for the band where the shallows give up and the bottom falls away. The productive water is a rod length or two out, not a hundred. Across Otsego County, recorded fish include rock bass, white sucker and largemouth bass. It is the county picture; the agency list is water-specific. On Mud Lake the obvious spot is not always the productive one.
Long-run averages give July about 67°F and January about 17°F. A solid cap is the normal state through winter. The lid arrives early and lasts until roughly mid April. Averages suggest open water from about mid April through to roughly early December. The strong weeks are the first after break-up and the last before the freeze. It sets the rhythm of the year at Mud Lake.
No access rule appears in what we hold. No slipway, car park or made path shows up nearby in mapping, so treat access as rough. For the bass here, soft plastics worked slow along cover and a spinnerbait for searching do most of the work. Parking is often the real limit rather than the bank itself. Barbless rules turn up on managed water more often than not. Should this one be busy, Doe Lake is 1.2 miles off. Treat Mud Lake as unsettled until someone local tells you otherwise.
