Clear overhead with good moonlight, with light air out of the E with pressure climbing. Most of the action on Mud Lake should come off reed fringes and open pockets. Block out the hours from the day. Cover water early, then settle where the signs are. Cooling water has fish active and on the move.

The Hillsdale County end of Michigan holds Mud Lake. The surroundings are pine and birch. It runs to roughly 26 acres — big enough to hold fish away from the bank, small enough to learn. Nearest place of any size is Hudson, 8.8 miles away. The big place round here is Toledo, 50 miles distant. The nearest edge is a long way off, so local rules apply throughout.
Depth remains unrecorded, so treat the first session as a survey. Look for the band where the shallows give up and the bottom falls away. The productive water is a rod length or two out, not a hundred. Records held for Hillsdale County cover bluegill, largemouth bass, yellow perch and black crappie. Records at county level tell you what is around, not what is stocked here. On Mud Lake the quiet end is the one worth the extra effort.
Seasonal averages run from 22°F in January up to 71°F in July. A solid cap is the normal state through winter. After late March the shallows warm and the fish move up. Ice clears near late March and comes back about mid December in a typical year. Late spring and early autumn carry the year between them. Mud Lake runs to its own calendar within the local pattern.
Whether the bank is open is not something our records settle. Public mapping records no formal access here, so plan for a walk and soft ground. Bass water: a Texas-rigged worm near cover, a spinnerbait when you need to cover ground. Gates get locked out of season on water like this. Close seasons apply to some species and not others. For a change of water, Bird Lake is 1.3 miles distant. Nothing here settles the position at Mud Lake for certain.
