A still, cloudless night on the water, with light air out of the SSE and pressure on the rise. The water to cover at Moss Lake is reed fringes and open pockets. A broad window opens from the day. Commit to the pattern once the first fish shows. The season of moving fish: stay mobile and watch for bait.

Moss Lake is set in Vilas County, Wisconsin. Country round the bank runs to mixed forest. The water covers some 33 acres, so pick a bank rather than trying to cover it all. The whole outline is near 1.1 miles, and most of it is walkable. By elevation it is in the upper part of our Wisconsin listings. Eagle River lies 19 miles from the water. Further out sit Lac du Flambeau (31 miles) and Iron River (33 miles). The county edge is within a short distance of the bank.
Depth remains unrecorded, so treat the first session as a survey. A natural lake fishes on cover, and cover here means weed and timber. On a natural lake the weed line and the shelf beyond it do the work. Across Vilas County, recorded fish include bluegill, yellow perch, walleye and largemouth bass. The county figures include rivers and lakes alike. Read Moss Lake for ten minutes before the first cast goes out.
Average temperature peaks around 65°F in July and bottoms out near 9°F in January. A solid cap is the normal state through winter. Count on hard cover from midwinter, and open water from late April. In an average year the thaw lands around late April and the freeze near late November. September and October fish steadily right up to the freeze. Moss Lake fishes to that pattern most years.
The access position is unclear from public sources. No dam controls it, and the level follows the season. Formal access is not mapped, so the last stretch is likely on foot. A small crankbait along the drop and a worm in the thick stuff cover the bass. Some banks are open only from a marked point. Fishing rules and camping rules are set separately here. Failing this one, try Fisher Lake, 0.9 miles away. Check the position at Moss Lake before loading the car.
