A crisp, open sky after dark, with a light E breeze with a settled glass. Give reed fringes and open pockets the first hour at Merritt Lake. Save your energy for the evening. Work the productive water thoroughly. The autumn feed-up is on; baitfish areas are the key.

Look for Merritt Lake in the Lapeer County part of Michigan. It stands 909 feet above sea level. At about 51 acres, a day is enough to walk the shoreline properly. About 1.3 miles of bank, so nothing stays unexplored for long. The town to know is Lapeer, 6.9 miles out. For a city, Sterling Heights is 30 miles off. The boundary is near enough that local access rules are worth double-checking.
Depth went unrecorded, which puts the reading back on you. The productive water is a rod length or two out, not a hundred. A natural lake fishes on cover, and cover here means weed and timber. Lapeer County records list bluegill, largemouth bass and pink salmon among the fish reported. Take it as the county picture rather than a promise for this water. At Merritt Lake the water rewards a slow, careful approach.
July runs about 70°F on average, January about 21°F. The middle months are generous; the ends are demanding. The lid arrives early and lasts until roughly early April. Open water usually runs from early April until about mid December. Fishing peaks soon after break-up and again before the cold returns. Keep it in mind when planning a trip to Merritt Lake.
No access rule appears in what we hold. Records list it as a natural water body rather than an impoundment. No car park, ramp or path is recorded within easy reach of the shore. Bass water: a Texas-rigged worm near cover, a spinnerbait when you need to cover ground. Ask in the nearest town if you are unsure. Fishing rules and camping rules are set separately here. Otsikita Lake sits 0.4 miles off and takes the overflow. Nothing on Merritt Lake should be assumed from this page alone.
