Glare on the water under a clear sky, with a firm WNW blow and no real change in pressure. The water to cover at Halstead Lake is the calm side of the wind. A long productive spell runs the day. A careful, quiet approach will out-fish a busy one. Autumn rewards covering water while the fish roam.

Halstead Lake is an Oakland County water, in Michigan. The surface lies 961 feet up. Small at around 3 acres: two anglers spread out cover most of it. It is one of the smaller waters we list in Oakland County. Start from Holly, 3.6 miles down the road. Beyond it, Ortonville at 6.8 miles and Fenton at 7.5 miles. This one is safely inside the county line.
Depth is unknown to us, and the shoreline is the better guide. Read the surface for the wind lane, then fish the edge of it. A natural lake fishes on cover, and cover here means weed and timber. Survey and observation records for Oakland County include bluegill, black crappie, largemouth bass, yellow perch and rock bass. What holds for the county may not hold for this water. Halstead Lake gives up its fish to patience rather than distance.
On the long-term average, July reads 70°F and January reads 22°F. Winter shuts the surface down for months. Break-up comes around early April, and the run that follows is short and strong. Averages suggest open water from about early April through to roughly mid December. The shoulder weeks of the open season are the productive ones. Halstead Lake runs to that rhythm year in and year out.
Whether you may fish here is not something records settle. Mapping shows no built access close by; expect to walk in from wherever you can leave the car. Bass water: a Texas-rigged worm near cover, a spinnerbait when you need to cover ground. Rules for this water may differ from the county norm. Where the way in crosses private ground, ask first. Minnie Lake sits 0.6 miles off and takes the overflow. Ask locally about Halstead Lake if anything is unclear.
