Flat light and a covered sky today, with an easy breeze from the NW and the barometer heading up. Activity on Grass Lake should centre on structure within a cast of the bank. The productive run goes night into morning. Fish tidy and take what the day gives. The pre-winter feed makes autumn days generous.

You will find Grass Lake in Mackinac County, Michigan. The country here is lake country bush. It measures about 40 acres, which is a comfortable size for bank fishing. Around 1.7 miles of margin, front to back. Start from Saint Ignace, 20 miles down the road. It is 170 miles to Greater Sudbury, the nearest city. You are close to a county edge here; who manages the access can change within a short drive.
Depth is unknown to us, and the shoreline is the better guide. Where the bottom changes texture, fish gather; find that line. Look for the band where the shallows give up and the bottom falls away. County-wide records name white sucker, rainbow smelt, yellow perch and rock bass. Take it as the county picture rather than a promise for this water. On Grass Lake a short move beats a long cast.
Temperature averages peak at 65°F in July and bottom out at 14°F in January. Winter shuts things down for a spell, then spring reopens them fast. The lid usually sets by midwinter and gives way around mid April. In an average year the thaw lands around mid April and the freeze near early December. Right after break-up, and again as the nights sharpen, is when to go. Plan around that when you fish Grass Lake.
Whether the bank is open is not something our records settle. No dam controls it, and the level follows the season. Grass Lake Hunting Club takes in this water; protected-area rules will apply. Largemouth respond to soft plastics tight to cover; go weedless where the growth is heavy. Gates get locked out of season on water like this. Night access is frequently treated as a separate matter. Round Lake sits 0.6 miles off and takes the overflow. Rules at Grass Lake are worth checking on the day.
