Hard light and clear air over the water, with a useful SSW wind pushing food about and a falling glass. On Gilbert Lake, work shallow cover and weed edges first. If you pick one session, make it the night. Change depth before you change anything else. Cooler water spreads fish back across the shallows.

The Iron County end of Michigan holds Gilbert Lake. It stands 1,440 feet above sea level. The water covers some 72 acres, so pick a bank rather than trying to cover it all. With about 2.1 miles of edge, you can try several depths in one session. Compared with other Michigan water on our list, it sits high. Nearest place of any size is Crystal Falls, 8.3 miles away. Beyond it, Stambaugh, Iron River at 13 miles and Iron River at 13 miles. It lies deep inside the county rather than near an edge.
No published figure covers depth, so learn it as you fish. On a natural lake the weed line and the shelf beyond it do the work. The productive water is a rod length or two out, not a hundred. Iron County records list brown trout, yellow perch, northern pike and walleye among the fish reported. Those are county-wide records, so not every one of them will be in this water. Gilbert Lake repays a walk before the first cast.
Climate records put July near 65°F and January near 10°F. Expect a real winter and a strong spring after it. The lid usually sets by midwinter and gives way around late April. The water is typically free of ice between late April and late November. Fishing peaks soon after break-up and again before the cold returns. That is the shape of the year on Gilbert Lake.
Whether the bank is open is not something our records settle. Records list it as a natural water body rather than an impoundment. The car has to stay half a mile away, which shapes how much tackle you bring. Largemouth respond to soft plastics tight to cover; go weedless where the growth is heavy. Parking space is the usual limit rather than the bank itself. Fishing rules and camping rules are set separately here. Gibson Lake, 1 mile away, makes the obvious fallback.
