Flat light and a covered sky today, with next to no ripple with the glass holding level. Fish at Cove Lake should hold close to the shallows early and the drop later. The night carries the best of the day. Make the first hour count and build on it. Shortening days concentrate the feeding into fewer hours.

Set in Jackson County, Michigan, this is Cove Lake. The bank is 951 feet above sea level. At roughly 19 acres, the whole thing is within casting reach of a single walk. Supplies mean a trip to Vandercook Lake, 0.9 miles off. Further out sit Jackson (3.6 miles) and Michigan Center (5 miles). The nearest boundary is a fair way off.
Depth here is unknown, so count the lead down before committing. The shallow end warms first and pulls fish in ahead of the rest. This is a lake, so the margins and the first drop matter most. Across Jackson County, recorded fish include bluegill, largemouth bass, yellow perch, black crappie and northern pike. What holds for the county may not hold for this water. On Cove Lake a short move beats a long cast.
July runs about 71°F on average, January about 22°F. The freeze arrives properly here and holds. The lid usually goes in late March, which opens the strongest weeks of the year. Break-up near late March, freeze-up near mid December: that is the shape of an average year. From the thaw to midsummer the fishing improves week by week. Expect Cove Lake to follow that timing.
Whether the bank is open is not something our records settle. A ramp is mapped within half a mile. The nearest car park we can see is half a mile out, so expect a walk with your gear. For the bass here, soft plastics worked slow along cover and a spinnerbait for searching do most of the work. Where a permit is needed, the nearest town usually sells it. Some ground is open by custom rather than by right, so tread carefully. Failing this one, try Mud Lake, 0.2 miles away. Signs at Cove Lake carry more weight than any list.
