Hard light and clear air over the water, with a light chop building from the WNW as pressure slides. Activity on Chain Lake should centre on the seam between weed and open water. One clear peak today: the night. Cover water early, then settle where the signs are. The autumn feed-up is on; baitfish areas are the key.

Chain Lake is set in Cass County, Michigan. This is rolling bush country. Around 34 acres of surface means several distinct areas to work. The whole outline is near 1.0 miles, and most of it is walkable. Supplies mean a trip to Cassopolis, 7.1 miles off. The big place round here is South Bend, 22 miles distant. It sits well inside the county, so one set of rules covers it.
Depth went unrecorded, which puts the reading back on you. Still water like this holds fish on the edges rather than out in the open. On a natural lake the weed line and the shelf beyond it do the work. Species logged across Cass County include bluegill, largemouth bass, yellow perch and warmouth. Records at county level tell you what is around, not what is stocked here. The shape of Chain Lake decides where the fish sit.
Between January at about 23°F and July at about 72°F, the water has a wide range to work through. Winter shuts things down for a spell, then spring reopens them fast. Ice-out usually falls in late March, and the weeks after it fish hardest. Open water usually runs from late March until about late December. Right after break-up, and again as the nights sharpen, is when to go. Keep it in mind when planning a trip to Chain Lake.
We have no record of the rules that apply on this bank. Records list it as a natural water body rather than an impoundment. Boats go in at Chain Lake Boat Launch, roughly half a mile from the water. For the bass here, soft plastics worked slow along cover and a spinnerbait for searching do most of the work. Check locally before you travel, because a wasted drive is a long one. Close seasons apply to some species and not others. Round Lake at 0.4 miles is the sensible second choice. Nothing here settles the position at Chain Lake for certain.
