A clear night sky over the water, with a kind SSE breeze on the water with the glass slipping lower. Big Star Lake should fish best around the calm side of the wind today. The strongest window runs from night into morning. Keep expectations modest and fish carefully. Autumn fish are feeding up and less fussy than in summer.

The Lake County end of Michigan holds Big Star Lake. The setting is pine and birch on every side. This is sizeable water at about 888 acres, and a boat opens up most of it. With 8.3 miles or so of shoreline, boat anglers cover ground the bank cannot. It is the biggest water on our Lake County list. Some 6.7 miles away sits Baldwin, the nearest settlement. Then Scottville, 19 miles, and White Cloud, 21 miles. A county boundary sits nearby, which can matter for local access rules.
No depth figure appears in our records, so the bank has to tell you. A soft bed grows weed late into autumn, which keeps fish shallow. Bays and points beat straight shoreline every time on water like this. Across Lake County, recorded fish include rainbow trout, brook trout, white sucker and bluegill. Those are county-wide records, so not every one of them will be in this water. Big Star Lake gives up its fish to patience rather than distance.
Temperature averages peak at 69°F in July and bottom out at 20°F in January. The season turns properly here, and fish follow it closely. After early April the shallows warm and the fish move up. The lid tends to go about early April and return around mid December. Fish feed hardest at the start and the close of the open season. Expect Big Star Lake to follow that timing.
Whether you may fish here is not something records settle. It formed naturally, so levels move with rainfall rather than with a gate. You will be walking about half a mile from the nearest car park. Largemouth respond to soft plastics tight to cover; go weedless where the growth is heavy. Parking is often the real limit rather than the bank itself. Keep proof of licence with you rather than in the car. For a change of water, Basford Lake is 0.6 miles distant. Check the position at Big Star Lake before loading the car.
