A bright day with hardly any cloud, with a whisper of wind from the WNW and pressure going nowhere. Expect most activity at Bair Lake around the calm side of the wind. The day peaks in the night. Cover water early, then settle where the signs are. The autumn feed-up is on; baitfish areas are the key.

Bair Lake falls in Cass County, part of Michigan. The water sits 876 feet up. It measures about 216 acres, which is a comfortable size for bank fishing. Bank access stretches around 2.4 miles in total. On our Cass County list it sits near the top for size. Constantine sits 8 miles from here and is the nearest stop. South Bend sits 27 miles out, and it is the nearest city worth the name. A county line runs close by, so local bylaws can differ within a short drive.
We hold no survey for this water; read the slope of the shoreline instead. The productive water is a rod length or two out, not a hundred. A natural lake fishes on cover, and cover here means weed and timber. Reported across Cass County: bluegill, largemouth bass, yellow perch, warmouth and pink salmon. What holds for the county may not hold for this water. At Bair Lake the water rewards a slow, careful approach.
Expect July to average close to 72°F, with January the cold end at about 23°F. A hard winter is normal, and the thaw brings a strong few weeks. Once it clears, about late March, the fishing comes on quickly. Expect the water usable from around late March until roughly mid December. September and October fish steadily right up to the freeze. Plan around that when you fish Bair Lake.
The rules here are undocumented as far as public sources go. It formed naturally, so levels move with rainfall rather than with a gate. Boats go in at Driskels Lake Boat Launch, roughly half a mile from the water. There are toilets mapped about half a mile away. A phone call first saves an afternoon. Some stretches are reserved and marked as such on the ground. Failing this one, try Driskels Lake, 0.9 miles away. Rules at Bair Lake are worth checking on the day.
