A closed sky with even light today, with a decent NNW wind working the banks with the barometer flat. Give bays that hold the day's warmth the first hour at Algonquin Lake. The evening carries the best of the day. Work the productive water thoroughly. Falling temperatures are switching fish back on.

The Barry County end of Michigan holds Algonquin Lake. The water sits 771 feet up. It runs to roughly 183 acres — big enough to hold fish away from the bank, small enough to learn. There is roughly 4.9 miles of bank, more than one visit can cover properly. On our Barry County list it sits near the top for size. Start from Hastings, 2.8 miles down the road. The big place round here is Grand Rapids, 26 miles distant. There is no boundary nearby to worry about.
Nothing in our records gives a depth for this one. On a natural lake the weed line and the shelf beyond it do the work. Read the surface for the wind lane, then fish the edge of it. Species logged across Barry County include bluegill, largemouth bass and yellow perch. Records at county level tell you what is around, not what is stocked here. On Algonquin Lake a short move beats a long cast.
July is the warm end of the year here, averaging about 71°F, while January sits near 22°F. Winter closes the water for a while, and the reopening is worth catching. Ice fishing carries the winter, and the water opens about late March. Ice clears near late March and comes back about mid December in a typical year. Late spring and early autumn carry the year between them. Expect Algonquin Lake to follow that timing.
We hold no note on access for this one. It formed naturally, so levels move with rainfall rather than with a gate. No made access appears within a short radius, so plan to park on a verge and walk. For the bass here, soft plastics worked slow along cover and a spinnerbait for searching do most of the work. Where access is informal, keep it that way by behaving. Where parking is tight, arriving early solves most problems. Carter Lake, 1.2 miles away, makes the obvious fallback. For Algonquin Lake in particular, ask before you travel.
