An even grey lid over the water, with a persistent wind from the WNW and pressure sitting still. Fish at Wards Pond should hold close to the closest cover to deeper water. A broad window opens from morning through afternoon. Commit to the pattern once the first fish shows. The pre-winter feed makes autumn days generous.

You will find Wards Pond in Berkshire County, Massachusetts. The water sits 1,342 feet up. This is a pocket water of some 22 acres, and every part of it is reachable from the bank. Compared with other Massachusetts water on our list, it sits high. The closest town, Otis, is 5.8 miles distant. Then New Marlborough, 9.3 miles, and Granville, 10 miles. The boundary is close enough to be worth checking before you fish.
No depth figure appears in our records, so the bank has to tell you. Draw-down through summer strips the margins, so follow the water out. Standing timber shows when the level drops, and fish sit against it. Species logged across Berkshire County include brown trout, pumpkinseed, largemouth bass, brook trout and bluegill. Read it as a county summary, not a water-by-water list. At Wards Pond light and wind decide more than tackle does.
Expect July to average close to 67°F, with January the cold end at about 20°F. Seasons are distinct, and each one fishes differently. After early April the shallows warm and the fish move up. Averages place the thaw at early April and the freeze at mid December. The strong weeks are the first after break-up and the last before the freeze. Keep it in mind when planning a trip to Wards Pond.
Who may fish here is not settled in anything we hold. This sits inside Tolland State Forest, so read the reserve notices first. Bass water: a Texas-rigged worm near cover, a spinnerbait when you need to cover ground. Check whether a boat is allowed before you tow one. Signs go up and come down, so check on the day. Failing this one, try Twining Pond, 1.2 miles away. For Wards Pond in particular, ask before you travel.
