A grey, even sky over the water, with light air out of the NNW and the barometer on the way down. The Cove should fish best around drains and drop-offs on the tide today. Plan around the stretch from afternoon into evening. Change depth before you change anything else. Fish follow the bait in autumn, so find one to find the other.

The Berkshire County end of Massachusetts holds The Cove. The setting is rolling bush on every side. You are 1 mile from Great Barrington. Berkshire Heights follows at 1.6 miles, then Housatonic at 3.4 miles. Water in the same corner: 1 mile out stands Mansfield Pond, Barbieri Reservoir some 1.7 miles off, 2.2 miles out stands Berle Pond, Long Pond some 2.7 miles off and 3.2 miles out stands Benedict Pond. The county line runs close by, so rules can change within a short drive.
Federal mapping classes it as swamp or marsh rather than open lake, so expect shallow water and heavy cover. Look for where the old bank line still shows under the surface. Levels move with the draw rather than the rain on water like this. Open biodiversity records for Berkshire County list brown trout, pumpkinseed, largemouth bass and brook trout. Records at county level tell you what is around, not what is stocked here. Work The Cove in sections rather than trying to cover it.
The year swings from about 21°F in January to roughly 69°F in July. Winter shuts things down for a spell, then spring reopens them fast. Ice fishing carries the winter, and the water opens about early April. In an average year the thaw lands around early April and the freeze near mid December. Fish feed hardest at the start and the close of the open season. The Cove runs to that rhythm year in and year out.
Who may fish here is not settled in anything we hold. A parking area is marked roughly half a mile out. Overnight stays are possible half a mile away. Housatonic Flats takes in this water; protected-area rules will apply. A small crankbait along the drop and a worm in the thick stuff cover the bass. Where access is informal, keep it that way by behaving. Where the way in crosses private ground, ask first. The nearest alternative is Mansfield Pond, 1 mile out. Check the position on The Cove before loading the car.
