A clean, cloudless night over the water, with light air out of the SSW and the barometer holding steady. On Riceville Pond, work gaps in the weed within a lob first. A long productive spell runs morning through afternoon. Make the first hour count and build on it. Cooling water has fish active and on the move.

Set in Worcester County, Riceville Pond is a Massachusetts water. Land around it is pine and birch. Roughly 61 acres: a morning covers one end, an afternoon the other. The full circuit measures close to 1.3 miles on foot. The town to know is Phillipston, 4.5 miles out. Athol follows at 4.7 miles, then Orange at 6.4 miles. Being near a boundary, it pays to know which side you are fishing.
Depth remains unrecorded, so treat the first session as a survey. Standing timber shows when the level drops, and fish sit against it. Points where the flooded channel swings in are the reliable ones. County-wide records name bluegill, chain pickerel, largemouth bass, pumpkinseed and yellow bullhead. County records show what lives in the area; the local agency holds the water-by-water list. On Riceville Pond that means starting tight and working out.
Between January at about 20°F and July at about 68°F, the water has a wide range to work through. The season turns properly here, and fish follow it closely. Ice is part of the season here, ending near early April. Average temperatures cross freezing around early April in spring and again near mid December in autumn. June through September is the settled part of the year, with the shoulders busier for fish. It sets the rhythm of the year at Riceville Pond.
Whether the bank is open is not something our records settle. Petersham State Forest takes in this water; protected-area rules will apply. Bass water: a Texas-rigged worm near cover, a spinnerbait when you need to cover ground. Where access is informal, keep it that way by behaving. Night access is frequently treated as a separate matter. Davenport Pond at 1.4 miles is the sensible second choice. Treat access at Riceville Pond as something to verify.
