A crisp, open sky after dark, with next to no ripple and pressure going nowhere. Fish at Muddy Pond should hold close to the shaded bank through the bright hours. The day fishes best from the day. Fish confidently and change only when the bites stop. Fish follow the bait in autumn, so find one to find the other.

Look for Muddy Pond in the Berkshire County part of Massachusetts. The bank gives way to rolling bush. It measures about 38 acres, which is a comfortable size for bank fishing. Compared with other Massachusetts water on our list, it sits high. Head to Hinsdale, 3.7 miles away, for anything you forgot. Springfield sits 33 miles out, and it is the nearest city worth the name. The boundary is near enough that local access rules are worth double-checking.
Depth is unknown to us, and the shoreline is the better guide. Still water like this holds fish on the edges rather than out in the open. The productive water is a rod length or two out, not a hundred. Fish documented in Berkshire County include brown trout, pumpkinseed, largemouth bass, brook trout and bluegill. These are county-wide records, so not all of them will be in this water. On Muddy Pond that means starting tight and working out.
Expect July near 67°F and January near 19°F on the long-run figures. The year runs cold to warm and back, with clear transitions. The lid usually goes in mid April, which opens the strongest weeks of the year. From about mid April to around mid December, expect open water on the long-run figures. June through September is the settled part of the year, with the shoulders busier for fish. Muddy Pond fishes to that pattern most years.
The access position is unclear from public sources. Part of this sits inside or beside Hinsdale Flats Wildlife Management Area, so read the notices. Bass water: a Texas-rigged worm near cover, a spinnerbait when you need to cover ground. Rules differ from one water to the next round here. Keep proof of licence with you rather than in the car. Ashley Lake sits 2.5 miles off and takes the overflow. For Muddy Pond, the notice at the access point is the final word.
