A mixed sky through the night, with calm air over the water and the barometer holding steady. Fish at Mud Pond should hold close to the warm end of the pond. A long productive spell runs the day. Make the first hour count and build on it. The pre-winter feed makes autumn days generous.

Mud Pond is one of the Berkshire County waters in Massachusetts. The country here is mixed forest. Surface area runs to about 5 acres — small enough to read in one session. It is a small entry by Berkshire County standards. Some 3.5 miles away sits Otis, the nearest settlement. The big place round here is Springfield, 30 miles distant. The nearest boundary is a fair way off.
No depth figure has reached our records, which makes a plummet useful. Bays and points beat straight shoreline every time on water like this. Where the bottom changes texture, fish gather; find that line. Species logged across Berkshire County include brown trout, pumpkinseed, largemouth bass and brook trout. It is the county picture; the agency list is water-specific. On Mud Pond the first feature you find is usually worth a session.
Expect July to average close to 67°F, with January the cold end at about 20°F. Winter shuts the surface down for months. Ice-out usually falls in early April, and the weeks after it fish hardest. Ice usually gives way near early April, and forms again about mid December. The middle of summer slows a little, with dawn and dusk carrying it. Plan around that when you fish Mud Pond.
Whether the bank is open is not something our records settle. This sits inside Long Mountain Wildlife Management Area, so read the reserve notices first. A small crankbait along the drop and a worm in the thick stuff cover the bass. Where the road in crosses private land, ask first. Rules for boats are stricter than rules for the bank in many places. Should this one be busy, Hayes Pond is 0.8 miles off. None of that is settled for Mud Pond in what we hold.
