Heavy overcast holding through the day, with a whisper of wind from the SSW and pressure leaking away. Start the search at The Basin along the margins and the shelf beyond them. The forecast backs the stretch from afternoon into evening. Ride the conditions while they last. Falling temperatures are switching fish back on.

The Basin is set in Androscoggin County, Maine. The sea is 22 miles distant. Roughly 3.6 sq miles of surface: treat each bay as a water in its own right. Some 11 miles of bank gives room to move when the wind turns. Size puts it in the front rank of our Androscoggin County list. Auburn is the closest place, 3.7 miles off. Further out sit Lewiston (3.9 miles) and Minot (5.5 miles). There is no boundary nearby to worry about.
Depth is unmeasured here, so let the shoreline guide you. A reservoir gives you a hard edge, a shelf, and not much else. Draw-down through summer strips the margins, so follow the water out. Open biodiversity records for Androscoggin County list brown trout, rainbow trout, Atlantic salmon, smallmouth bass and black crappie. At least one recorded species is protected in parts of its range; read the local rules before targeting anything. Anyone new to The Basin should walk it once before setting up.
Long-term averages put July at about 68°F and January near 18°F. Winter shuts things down for a spell, then spring reopens them fast. The freeze runs deep into the year, with break-up near early April. Ice clears near early April and comes back about mid December in a typical year. Fishing peaks soon after break-up and again before the cold returns. On The Basin the same rules apply, with local timing.
Nothing on record says whether the bank is open or closed. We find no slipway, car park or made path within a short radius, so treat access as rough. Bass water: a Texas-rigged worm near cover, a spinnerbait when you need to cover ground. A landowner's word beats anything printed elsewhere. Keep proof of licence with you rather than in the car. Gulf Island Pond sits 2.5 miles off and takes the overflow. Confirm access to The Basin locally before you travel.
