Clear air and long views across the water tonight, with light air out of the SSW and the barometer on the way down. Expect most activity at Schoodic Lake around the margins and the shelf beyond them. The useful hours run the day. Trust the forecast and stay out through the window. Cooling water has fish active and on the move.

The Piscataquis County end of Maine holds Schoodic Lake. Beyond the shoreline you have rolling bush. At roughly 10.9 sq miles it ranks among the larger waters in the region. The bank runs about 26 miles in total, split between open shore and sheltered corners. Size puts it in the front rank of our Piscataquis County list. Nearest place of any size is Brownville, 7 miles away. After that come Milo at 8.8 miles and Howland at 16 miles. The nearest edge is a long way off, so local rules apply throughout.
Nothing we hold settles how deep this runs. Held water runs deepest at the wall and shallows back to the inflow. The old creek line under the surface is the feature worth finding. Reported across Piscataquis County: Atlantic salmon, rainbow smelt, brook trout, brown trout and Arctic charr. Protected fish appear in the records for this area, so treat the list as information, not an invitation. On Schoodic Lake the obvious spot is not always the productive one.
Typical July readings run about 67°F; by January the average is down near 14°F. Expect a real winter and a strong spring after it. Winter locks it down, and mid April brings it back. Break-up near mid April, freeze-up near early December: that is the shape of an average year. The middle of summer slows a little, with dawn and dusk carrying it. On Schoodic Lake that shapes the whole year.
Nothing we hold confirms whether access is permitted. We find no slipway, car park or made path within a short radius, so treat access as rough. A small crankbait along the drop and a worm in the thick stuff cover the bass. Check whether a boat is allowed before you tow one. Signs go up and come down, so check on the day. Norton Pond, 2.2 miles away, makes the obvious fallback. Ask locally about Schoodic Lake if anything is unclear.
