Mud Pond is one of the Piscataquis County listings for Maine. The surroundings are mixed forest. With some 47 acres of water, there is room for a boat but no need of one. The bank runs about 1.1 miles all the way round, so one visit can cover most of it. Dover-Foxcroft at 12 miles is the nearest place to stop. Brownville lies 13 miles off, Sangerville another 14 miles. Rules here are straightforward: one county, one set of rules.
We hold no depth figure for this one. This is a lake, so the margins and the first drop matter most. The shallow end warms first and pulls fish in ahead of the rest. Piscataquis County records list Atlantic salmon, rainbow smelt and brook trout among the fish reported. Some of the species recorded here are protected or tightly regulated, so check what may be targeted before you fish. Mud Pond responds to conditions more than to tactics.
Expect July to average close to 65°F, with January the cold end at about 12°F. Cold winters and warm summers give a wide working range. Break-up comes around late April, and the run that follows is short and strong. Averages suggest open water from about late April through to roughly early December. The first weeks of open water and the last are the ones to plan for. Plan any trip to Mud Pond around it.
Our records carry no access rule either way. No dam controls it, and the level follows the season. No made access appears within a short radius, so plan to park on a verge and walk. A small crankbait along the drop and a worm in the thick stuff cover the bass. Rules differ from one water to the next round here. Night access is frequently treated as a separate matter. Little Benson Pond at 0.7 miles is the sensible second choice. Signs at Mud Pond carry more weight than any list.
