A closed sky with even light today, with a busy NW wind on the open water and the barometer on the way down. Start the search at Horse Pond along whatever cover the water offers. A stay-home graph, with the evening as the one excuse to go. Scale down and fish slowly. The cold puts a premium on the calmest, deepest water.

Set in Somerset County, Maine, this is Horse Pond. This is lake country bush country. It is pond-in-a-field scale, with the far bank a short lob away. It is a small entry by Somerset County standards. For supplies, Linière is 32 miles out. It is 83 miles to Lévis, the nearest city. There is no boundary nearby to worry about.
Depth is not on record here, which means reading the ground instead. A soft bed grows weed late into autumn, which keeps fish shallow. Read the surface for the wind lane, then fish the edge of it. County-wide records name Atlantic salmon, brown trout, smallmouth bass, rainbow smelt and rainbow trout. At least one recorded species is protected in parts of its range; read the local rules before targeting anything. On Horse Pond that means starting tight and working out.
Typical July readings run about 63°F; by January the average is down near 8°F. The year splits cleanly: hard water, then open water. Firm cover through the cold months, then open water from late April. Expect the water usable from around late April until roughly late November. Fish feed hardest at the start and the close of the open season. Horse Pond runs to its own calendar within the local pattern.
Whether the bank is open is not something our records settle. Formal access is not mapped, so the last stretch is likely on foot. For the bass here, soft plastics worked slow along cover and a spinnerbait for searching do most of the work. Look for a notice board at the entrance. Access can change hands, so last year's answer may not hold. If the gate is shut, Little Mucalsea Pond at 1.4 miles is the nearest alternative. Treat Horse Pond as unsettled until someone local tells you otherwise.
