Heavy overcast holding through the day, with enough NW wind to stack food downwind with the barometer flat. Give sheltered bays and points the first hour at Deer Lake. A stay-home graph, with the morning as the one excuse to go. Quiet tactics only; the fish will not chase today. Cooling water has fish active and on the move.

Deer Lake is one of the Hancock County waters in Maine. The ground around here is pine and birch. Roughly 51 acres: a morning covers one end, an afternoon the other. The whole outline is near 1.1 miles, and most of it is walkable. Some 25 miles away sits Bradley, the nearest settlement. Sherbrooke is the closest city, 186 miles away. One jurisdiction covers this water end to end.
Depth is unmeasured here, so let the shoreline guide you. A natural lake fishes on cover, and cover here means weed and timber. The shallow end warms first and pulls fish in ahead of the rest. Across Hancock County, recorded fish include Atlantic salmon, brown trout, alewife, rainbow smelt and blueback herring. At least one recorded species is protected in parts of its range; read the local rules before targeting anything. On Deer Lake the obvious spot is not always the productive one.
The range across the year is 16°F to 67°F. Fishing here follows the temperature more than the calendar. Look for the thaw near mid April; the fishing lifts straight after. The open-water window runs from around mid April to about early December in an average year. September and October fish steadily right up to the freeze. Plan any trip to Deer Lake around it.
Nothing in our records says who may fish here. This is a natural basin, not a dammed one. A boat ramp sits about half a mile from the water. Bass water: a Texas-rigged worm near cover, a spinnerbait when you need to cover ground. Rules differ from one water to the next round here. Barbless rules turn up on managed water more often than not. Haycock Pond, 0.4 miles away, makes the obvious fallback. Where Deer Lake is concerned, a local answer beats a written one.
