Heavy overcast holding through the day, with stillness over the whole water and a falling glass. Carpenter Pond should fish best around gaps in the weed within a lob today. Expectations low today; if anything moves, it will be in the morning. Fish the best hour hard and keep the rest short.

Out in Piscataquis County, Maine, sits Carpenter Pond. The surface lies 1,037 feet up. It runs to roughly 144 acres — big enough to hold fish away from the bank, small enough to learn. A shoreline of some 2.0 miles keeps the choices simple. Nearest town is Patten, 38 miles off. Millinocket follows at 47 miles, then East Millinocket at 52 miles. No county line comes close, which keeps the paperwork simple.
Without a survey to go on, judge depth from how the bank falls away. Look for the band where the shallows give up and the bottom falls away. Where the bottom changes texture, fish gather; find that line. Piscataquis County records list Atlantic salmon, rainbow smelt and brook trout among the fish reported. Several of these carry legal protection or closed seasons; the rulebook comes before the rod. Treat Carpenter Pond as a water to read rather than to cover.
Expect July to average close to 64°F, with January the cold end at about 8°F. Cold winters and warm summers give a wide working range. Look for the thaw near late April; the fishing lifts straight after. Average temperatures cross freezing around late April in spring and again near late November in autumn. Reckon on open water from spring through to late autumn, with May and June the strongest. It holds true on Carpenter Pond more years than not.
Whether the bank is open is not something our records settle. No dam controls it, and the level follows the season. There is no recorded infrastructure here; expect to find your own way in. Bass water: a Texas-rigged worm near cover, a spinnerbait when you need to cover ground. Take the rules with you rather than trusting memory. Keep proof of licence with you rather than in the car. May Pond sits 0.9 miles off and takes the overflow. None of that is settled for Carpenter Pond in what we hold.
