Rain colouring the margins today, with next to no ripple and pressure sitting still. Expect most activity at Cargill Pond around whatever cover the water offers. A hard day on paper; the night edges the rest. Scale down and fish slowly. Cooler water spreads fish back across the shallows.

Cargill Pond is one of the Waldo County waters in Maine. The surface lies 600 feet up. It runs to roughly 57 acres — big enough to hold fish away from the bank, small enough to learn. The bank runs about 2.2 miles all the way round, so one visit can cover most of it. 6.6 miles away sits Searsmont, the nearest town. The big place round here is Manchester, 142 miles distant. A county boundary sits nearby, which can matter for local access rules.
Open data we checked carries no depth for this water. Look for the band where the shallows give up and the bottom falls away. The productive water is a rod length or two out, not a hundred. Species logged across Waldo County include brown trout, Atlantic salmon, alewife and smallmouth bass. Several of these carry legal protection or closed seasons; the rulebook comes before the rod. Cargill Pond responds to conditions more than to tactics.
Long-run averages give July about 68°F and January about 19°F. Four clear seasons, with a proper winter at one end. Ice-out usually falls in early April, and the weeks after it fish hardest. Going by climate averages, expect open water from about early April until roughly mid December. Early summer and early autumn carry the open-water season. The season on Cargill Pond rarely departs from it.
Who may fish here is not settled in anything we hold. This is a natural basin, not a dammed one. Public mapping records no formal access here, so plan for a walk and soft ground. A small crankbait along the drop and a worm in the thick stuff cover the bass. Parking space is the usual limit rather than the bank itself. Rules for boats are stricter than rules for the bank in many places. The nearest alternative is Stevens Pond, 1.3 miles out. For Cargill Pond in particular, ask before you travel.
