A crisp, open sky after dark, with light air out of the NNW and pressure on the rise. On Loch Ayr, work the calm side of the wind first. Block out the hours from night into morning. Cover water early, then settle where the signs are. Fish follow the bait in autumn, so find one to find the other.

Look for Loch Ayr in Ringgold County, Iowa. Around the bank it is lake country bush. Around 79 acres of surface means several distinct areas to work. There is roughly 1.9 miles of shoreline here, which is a short walk end to end. Mount Ayr sits 2.2 miles from the bank. After that come Lamoni at 18 miles and Lenox at 19 miles. No border sits close enough to matter.
Nothing we hold settles how deep this runs. The old creek line under the surface is the feature worth finding. Points where the flooded channel swings in are the reliable ones. Open biodiversity records for Ringgold County list brown trout, white sucker and channel catfish. What holds for the county may not hold for this water. Loch Ayr gives up its fish to patience rather than distance.
Long-term averages put July at about 75°F and January near 22°F. The year splits cleanly: hard water, then open water. Once it clears, about mid March, the fishing comes on quickly. The season between ice runs from about mid March to mid December. The shoulder weeks of the open season are the productive ones. Anyone fishing Loch Ayr regularly works to that calendar.
Who may fish here is not settled in anything we hold. A slipway is marked about half a mile from here. Mt. Ayr Fish Hatchery takes in this water; protected-area rules will apply. For the trout, small spinners and a box of nymphs cover both approaches. Some banks are open only from a marked point. Signs go up and come down, so check on the day. Old Reservoir, 1.5 miles away, makes the obvious fallback. Treat access at Loch Ayr as something to verify.
