No cloud to trap the day's warmth tonight, with an easy breeze from the WNW with the glass on the way up. On Lake Wapello, work the margins and the shelf beyond them first. The best of it runs the day. Push the good hours hard and rest through the dead ones. Shortening days concentrate the feeding into fewer hours.

Lake Wapello is set in Davis County, Iowa. It lies 787 feet above sea level. It measures some 266 acres, and wind has room to build across it. At about 4.6 miles of edge, most people work one arm at a time. Bloomfield lies 9.8 miles from the water. It is 76 miles to Des Moines, the nearest city. Rules can differ a short way off, since the county line is near.
Depth is not on record here, so the bank has to tell you. Look for where the old bank line still shows under the surface. A reservoir gives you a hard edge, a shelf, and not much else. County-wide records name bluegill, redear sunfish, black bullhead and black crappie. Records at county level tell you what is around, not what is stocked here. Treat Lake Wapello as a water to read rather than to cover.
The warmest month averages 76°F, the coldest about 22°F. The middle months are generous; the ends are demanding. Count on hard cover from midwinter, and open water from mid March. On the long-run averages the water opens up around mid March and starts locking again about mid December. The shoulder weeks of the open season are the productive ones. On Lake Wapello the same rules apply, with local timing.
The rules here are undocumented as far as public sources go. Public data has parking about half a mile from the shore. You can camp about half a mile away, going by the mapping. Toilets are half a mile away, which matters on a long session. Check whether a boat is allowed before you tow one. Some ground is open by custom rather than by right, so tread carefully. Lower City Reservoir, 17 miles away, makes the obvious fallback. None of that is settled for Lake Wapello in what we hold.
