A crisp, open sky after dark, with mild air moving in from the NW with the glass on the way up. Whatever swims in Lake Arbor should be near sheltered bays and points. A broad window opens from night into morning. Commit to the pattern once the first fish shows. Cooling water has fish active and on the move.

Look for Lake Arbor in the Poweshiek County part of Iowa. It stands 945 feet above sea level. For supplies, Grinnell is 0.9 miles out. The nearest city of size is Des Moines, 46 miles away. Alternatives close at hand: Ken Wolfe Lake after 12 miles, Lake Ponderosa the better part of 12 miles, Holiday Lake after 16 miles, Cherry Lake the better part of 18 miles and Sportsman Lake after 20 miles. A county line runs close by, so local bylaws can differ within a short drive.
Depth is not on record here, which means reading the ground instead. Held water runs deepest at the wall and shallows back to the inflow. Built water gives depth close in, which suits a bank angler. County-wide records name bluegill, channel catfish, redear sunfish, black crappie and common carp. The list covers the county rather than this water alone, so treat it as a guide. Read Lake Arbor for ten minutes before the first cast goes out.
Average temperature peaks around 74°F in July and bottoms out near 18°F in January. Hard water is a season in its own right here. Count the season from break-up, usually late March. Ice usually gives way near late March, and forms again about mid December. The weeks after the thaw and the ones before the freeze are the strongest. That is the shape of the year on Lake Arbor.
Whether the bank is open is not something our records settle. There is recorded parking some half a mile off. A pier half a mile from here gives a platform over deeper water. Catfish want bait on the bottom: cut bait or worms, a simple running rig, and patience after dark. A phone call first saves an afternoon. Barbless rules turn up on managed water more often than not. For a change of water, Ken Wolfe Lake is 12 miles distant. Signs at Lake Arbor carry more weight than any list.
