Bright moon and an empty sky tonight, with hardly a ripple anywhere and pressure on the rise. The water to cover at Goose Lake is the shaded margin through bright spells. Plan around the stretch from the day. Keep moving until you find them. The autumn feed-up is on; baitfish areas are the key.

Goose Lake is set in Clinton County, Iowa. Height above sea level is 646 feet. It runs to roughly 121 acres — big enough to hold fish away from the bank, small enough to learn. Around 1.9 miles of margin, front to back. Of the waters listed here in Clinton County, this is the largest. Start from Preston, 5.7 miles down the road. After that come De Witt at 12 miles and Clinton at 14 miles. Rules can differ a short way off, since the county line is near.
We hold no depth figure for this one. A natural lake fishes on cover, and cover here means weed and timber. Read the surface for the wind lane, then fish the edge of it. Across Clinton County, recorded fish include black crappie, gizzard shad and channel catfish. Records at this level tell you what is in the area. Goose Lake gives up its fish to patience rather than distance.
Expect July near 73°F and January near 18°F on the long-run figures. The year runs cold to warm and back, with clear transitions. After late March the shallows warm and the fish move up. Ice usually gives way near late March, and forms again about mid December. Fishing peaks soon after break-up and again before the cold returns. On Goose Lake the same rules apply, with local timing.
The rules here are undocumented as far as public sources go. No dam controls it, and the level follows the season. This sits inside Goose Lake Wildlife Management Area, so read the reserve notices first. Bass water: a Texas-rigged worm near cover, a spinnerbait when you need to cover ground. State or provincial rules still apply whatever the bank status. Night access is frequently treated as a separate matter. For a change of water, Lower Sabula Lake is 13 miles distant. For Goose Lake in particular, ask before you travel.
