Heavy overcast holding through the day, with enough SW wind to stack food downwind and a falling glass. On Spychalskis Pond, work gaps in the weed within a lob first. A long productive spell runs the day. Make the first hour count and build on it. Cooler water spreads fish back across the shallows.

Spychalskis Pond lies in LaPorte County, in Indiana. It sits in rolling bush. Surface area runs to about 3 acres — small enough to read in one session. On size it sits at the modest end of our LaPorte County list. Otis sits 2.7 miles from the bank. After that come Trail Creek at 4.7 miles and Michigan City at 5.3 miles. The county line runs close by, so rules can change within a short drive.
Nothing we hold settles how deep this runs. A reservoir gives you a hard edge, a shelf, and not much else. Points where the flooded channel swings in are the reliable ones. County-wide records name shortnose cisco, alewife, rainbow smelt and rainbow trout. County records show what lives in the area; the local agency holds the water-by-water list. On Spychalskis Pond the obvious spot is not always the productive one.
In an average year July sits at 72°F and January at 23°F. A full turn of seasons, with the strongest sport on either side of summer. Count the season from break-up, usually late March. The lid tends to go about late March and return around late December. The shoulder weeks of the open season are the productive ones. At Spychalskis Pond the season follows that pattern closely.
Whether the bank is open is not something our records settle. Formal access is not mapped, so the last stretch is likely on foot. Trout here take small spinners, spoons and, where fly water allows, a nymph or dry. Sort the permit out before you load the car. Some water is controlled locally without a sign saying so. Walton Lake, 1.6 miles away, makes the obvious fallback. Check the position at Spychalskis Pond before loading the car.
