Thin cloud passing over the water tonight, with a stiffish breeze from the S and pressure on the rise. Give reed fringes and open pockets the first hour at Lake McCoy. The best of it runs the day. Push the good hours hard and rest through the dead ones. Falling temperatures are switching fish back on.

Set in Decatur County, Lake McCoy is an Indiana water. It sits in rolling hill country. With some 31 acres of water, there is room for a boat but no need of one. The edge runs 1.3 miles or so, easy to work in an afternoon. It sits higher than most water we list in Indiana. The closest town, Greensburg, is 4.7 miles away. Batesville is 9.4 miles and Westport 14 miles. There is no boundary nearby to worry about.
Depth went unrecorded, which puts the reading back on you. Draw-down through summer strips the margins, so follow the water out. Standing timber shows when the level drops, and fish sit against it. Reported across Decatur County: orangethroat darter, bluegill, green sunfish and johnny darter. Records at this level tell you what is in the area. Treat Lake McCoy as a water to read rather than to cover.
Expect July near 74°F and January near 27°F on the long-run figures. In milder years the surface never sets. In a normal year the cover is thin and short-lived. February into May fishes hardest as the water warms. Time your trip to Lake McCoy by conditions rather than dates. Late evening often out-fishes the whole afternoon.
Whether the bank is open is not something our records settle. Public mapping records no formal access here, so plan for a walk and soft ground. Bass water: a Texas-rigged worm near cover, a spinnerbait when you need to cover ground. Where access is informal, keep it that way by behaving. Some water is controlled locally without a sign saying so. Reed Reservoir sits 2.3 miles off and takes the overflow. Treat access at Lake McCoy as something to verify.
