Broken cloud drifting past the moon tonight, with a whisper of wind from the SSW with pressure dropping. Activity on Cook Lake should centre on the calm side of the wind. Expect the better fishing from the day. Give the likely spots time before moving. Cooler water spreads fish back across the shallows.

Marshall County in Indiana is where Cook Lake sits. The surface lies 768 feet up. It measures about 90 acres, which is a comfortable size for bank fishing. The edge runs 1.8 miles or so, easy to work in an afternoon. Plymouth sits 4.2 miles from here and is the nearest stop. Further out sit Culver (6.3 miles) and Argos (9 miles). A county line runs close by, so local bylaws can differ within a short drive.
Depth is unknown to us, and the shoreline is the better guide. Weed, then depth: that is the order to fish a water of this kind. Look for the band where the shallows give up and the bottom falls away. County-wide records name johnny darter, bluegill, redfin pickerel, yellow bullhead and Iowa darter. The county figures include rivers and lakes alike. Cook Lake repays a walk before the first cast.
On the long-term average, July reads 73°F and January reads 23°F. Winter closes the water for a while, and the reopening is worth catching. Ice fishing carries the winter, and the water opens about mid March. The water is typically free of ice between mid March and late December. Fish feed hardest at the start and the close of the open season. Cook Lake runs to its own calendar within the local pattern.
No access rule appears in what we hold. This is a natural basin, not a dammed one. A campsite is mapped about half a mile away, which makes an early start easier. A wire trace and a big bright lure handle the pike; deep water asks for a heavier spoon. Take the rules with you rather than trusting memory. Night access is frequently treated as a separate matter. The nearest alternative is Holem Lake, 0.2 miles out. Confirm before you fish Cook Lake.
