Glare on the water under a clear sky, with a working W breeze with the glass on the way up. Expect most activity at Brown Lake around the seam between weed and open water. The useful hours run night into morning. Trust the forecast and stay out through the window. Falling temperatures are switching fish back on.

Brown Lake is set in Steuben County, Indiana. The surface lies 935 feet up. The water covers some 37 acres, so pick a bank rather than trying to cover it all. Shoreline comes to about 1.0 miles, small enough to learn in a day. 9.4 miles away sits Bronson, the nearest town. Beyond it, Angola at 12 miles and Sturgis at 12 miles. Two sets of local rules meet not far from this water.
Depth is not on record here, which means reading the ground instead. The productive water is a rod length or two out, not a hundred. Where the bottom changes texture, fish gather; find that line. Across Steuben County, recorded fish include bluegill, yellow perch and largemouth bass. Take it as the county picture rather than a promise for this water. On Brown Lake the obvious spot is not always the productive one.
July runs about 71°F on average, January about 22°F. A hard winter is normal, and the thaw brings a strong few weeks. After late March the shallows warm and the fish move up. Break-up near late March, freeze-up near mid December: that is the shape of an average year. The middle of summer slows a little, with dawn and dusk carrying it. It holds true on Brown Lake more years than not.
The access position is unclear from public sources. It formed naturally, so levels move with rainfall rather than with a gate. A carry of half a mile from the nearest parking is the price of fishing here. A pier or jetty stands half a mile away, which helps on a crowded bank. A toilet block sits half a mile away. Take the rules with you rather than trusting memory. Keep proof of licence with you rather than in the car. For a change of water, Wall Lake is 0.6 miles distant. None of that is settled for Brown Lake in what we hold.
