A sharp, clear morning turning into a bright day, with a decent W wind working the banks and a rising glass. The productive water at Bass Lake will be around the first drop-off and weed lines. Plan around the stretch from the day. Keep moving until you find them. Shortening days concentrate the feeding into fewer hours.

Set in Steuben County, Bass Lake is an Indiana water. The land about it is lake country bush. The water covers some 60 acres, so pick a bank rather than trying to cover it all. Roughly 1.3 miles of bank means you can walk to a fresh area when one goes quiet. It sits higher than most water we list in Indiana. The closest town, Angola, is 4.9 miles away. Fremont is 11 miles away, with Hamilton at 12 miles. A county boundary sits nearby, which can matter for local access rules.
Depth here is unknown, so count the lead down before committing. On a natural lake the weed line and the shelf beyond it do the work. The productive water is a rod length or two out, not a hundred. Fish documented in Steuben County include bluegill, yellow perch, largemouth bass and warmouth. Those are county-wide records, so not every one of them will be in this water. Bass Lake gives up its fish to patience rather than distance.
July is the warm end of the year here, averaging about 71°F, while January sits near 22°F. Cold winters and warm summers give a wide working range. The open season starts with the thaw, near enough late March. Expect the water usable from around late March until roughly mid December. Right after break-up, and again as the nights sharpen, is when to go. On Bass Lake the same rules apply, with local timing.
Nothing on record says whether the bank is open or closed. This is a natural basin, not a dammed one. There is a marina, Hogback Lake, half a mile away. A small crankbait along the drop and a worm in the thick stuff cover the bass. A phone call first saves an afternoon. Where tickets apply, they are sold in the nearest town rather than on the bank. Should this one be busy, Howard Lake is 0.5 miles off. None of that is settled for Bass Lake in what we hold.
