Soft grey light all day today, with light air out of the E and a falling glass. Whatever swims in Sunset Lake should be near windblown banks where food collects. The best of it runs the day. Push the good hours hard and rest through the dead ones. Falling temperatures are switching fish back on.

Sunset Lake is a McLean County water, Illinois side. Elevation runs to 823 feet. At roughly 10 acres, the whole thing is within casting reach of a single walk. Our McLean County list holds plenty of bigger water. Start from Danvers, 6.3 miles down the road. After that come Hudson at 6.5 miles and Twin Grove at 8 miles. The boundary is near enough that local access rules are worth double-checking.
No depth figure has reached our records, which makes a plummet useful. The arms fish better than the open middle whenever the water is up. Inflow corners move water, and moving water gathers fish. Across McLean County, recorded fish include johnny darter, white sucker, bluegill and yellow bullhead. It is the county picture; the agency list is water-specific. At Sunset Lake light and wind decide more than tackle does.
Climate normals give 74°F for July and 22°F for January. The middle months are generous; the ends are demanding. The open season starts with the thaw, near enough mid March. The lid tends to go about mid March and return around late December. The open run goes from the thaw to the freeze, and April through October covers most of it. Plan around that when you fish Sunset Lake.
Access status is simply unknown for this water. Nothing built is recorded close to the bank here. A small crankbait along the drop and a worm in the thick stuff cover the bass. Where access is informal, keep it that way by behaving. A polite question at the farm gate opens more banks than anything else. For a change of water, Barwell Lake is 1.3 miles distant.
