A clean, cloudless night over the water, with a working WSW breeze as pressure builds. Whatever swims in Lake Mingo should be near the shallows early and the drop later. Block out the hours from night into morning. Cover water early, then settle where the signs are. Fish follow the bait in autumn, so find one to find the other.

Lake Mingo is set in Vermilion County, Illinois. The bank gives way to mixed forest. Roughly 150 acres: a morning covers one end, an afternoon the other. The bank runs about 2.5 miles all the way round, so one visit can cover most of it. Nearest town is Oakwood, 6.8 miles off. Danville follows at 7.9 miles, then Tilton at 8.9 miles. One jurisdiction covers this water end to end.
Depth here is unknown, so count the lead down before committing. Held water runs deepest at the wall and shallows back to the inflow. The old creek line under the surface is the feature worth finding. Open biodiversity records for Vermilion County list greenside darter, rainbow darter, longear sunfish, smallmouth bass and stonecat. Records at this level tell you what is in the area. Read Lake Mingo before you fish it and the day goes better.
The warmest month averages 75°F, the coldest about 24°F. Hard water is a season in its own right here. Break-up comes around mid March, and the run that follows is short and strong. In an average year the thaw lands around mid March and the freeze near late December. Fishing peaks soon after break-up and again before the cold returns. It holds true on Lake Mingo more years than not.
Nothing on record says whether the bank is open or closed. Bunker Hill Access gives a made launch, half a mile off. There is somewhere to leave the car, half a mile off. Mapping shows a campsite some half a mile from the water. Facilities run to toilets half a mile from the water. State or provincial rules still apply whatever the bank status. A polite question at the farm gate opens more banks than anything else. Failing this one, try Windfall Lake, 1.1 miles away. The position on Lake Mingo is worth confirming on the day.
