Heavy overcast holding through the day, with a light E breeze and a falling glass. On Horseshoe Lake, work the shaded margin through bright spells first. The strongest window runs from morning through afternoon. Stay mobile and follow the activity. The autumn feed-up is on; baitfish areas are the key.

Set in Knox County, Illinois, this is Horseshoe Lake. The bank is 584 feet above sea level. This is a pocket water of some 8 acres, and every part of it is reachable from the bank. Nearest place of any size is Knoxville, 7 miles away. Beyond it, Abingdon at 8.2 miles and Galesburg at 12 miles. The boundary is near enough that local access rules are worth double-checking.
Nothing we hold settles how deep this runs. The productive water is a rod length or two out, not a hundred. The shallow end warms first and pulls fish in ahead of the rest. Records held for Knox County cover johnny darter, largemouth bass, white sucker and slenderhead darter. Read it as a county summary, not a water-by-water list. At Horseshoe Lake the water rewards a slow, careful approach.
Climate records put July near 75°F and January near 22°F. A solid cap is the normal state through winter. Expect a solid lid for months and a thaw around mid March. Going by climate averages, expect open water from about mid March until roughly mid December. September and October fish steadily right up to the freeze. The season on Horseshoe Lake rarely departs from it.
The rules here are undocumented as far as public sources go. No launch point is recorded nearby, so this is a bank water unless you carry a boat in. Bass water: a Texas-rigged worm near cover, a spinnerbait when you need to cover ground. Season dates differ by species, so read the table. Night access is frequently treated as a separate matter. Lake Bracken sits 6.8 miles off and takes the overflow. Confirm before you fish Horseshoe Lake.
