A still, cloudless night on the water, with a gentle ripple from the WSW and pressure leaking away. Expect most activity at Gatch Lake around windblown banks where food collects. The strongest window runs from night into morning. Stay mobile and follow the activity. The pre-winter feed makes autumn days generous.

Gatch Lake is one of the Fayette County listings for Illinois. This is farm and woodlot ground. At 10 acres it is the sort of place you fish for an evening rather than a day. The nearest town is Vandalia, 7.8 miles away. Beyond it, Saint Elmo at 11 miles and Altamont at 17 miles. The county edge is within a short distance of the bank.
Without a survey to go on, judge depth from how the bank falls away. Points where the flooded channel swings in are the reliable ones. Look for where the old bank line still shows under the surface. Across Fayette County, recorded fish include orangethroat darter, green sunfish, johnny darter, bluegill and longear sunfish. The county figures include rivers and lakes alike. At Gatch Lake the water rewards a slow, careful approach.
The warmest month averages 77°F, the coldest about 27°F. Spring and autumn are the strongest, but nothing is truly closed. It should never be assumed safe, whatever the month says. Late winter often fishes better here than midsummer does. Anyone fishing Gatch Lake regularly works to that calendar.
Our records carry no access rule either way. There is no recorded infrastructure here; expect to find your own way in. A small crankbait along the drop and a worm in the thick stuff cover the bass. Rules differ from one water to the next round here. Some ground is open by custom rather than by right, so tread carefully. Stanbery Lake, 4.6 miles away, makes the obvious fallback. Confirm access to Gatch Lake locally before you travel.
