Overcast skies today, with a gentle ripple from the E as pressure slides. On Billsbach Lake, work windblown banks where food collects first. Plan around the stretch from afternoon into evening. Keep moving until you find them. Falling temperatures are switching fish back on.

Billsbach Lake is one of the Marshall County listings for Illinois. It lies 440 feet above sea level. At some 872 acres it is far too large to cover on foot in a day. It ranks among the bigger water on our Illinois list. The closest town, Henry, is 2.1 miles away. Beyond it, Lacon at 4.6 miles and Washburn at 12 miles. Local rules may differ a few miles either side of here.
Without a survey to go on, judge depth from how the bank falls away. Look for the band where the shallows give up and the bottom falls away. This is a lake, so the margins and the first drop matter most. Across Marshall County, recorded fish include green sunfish, largemouth bass, logperch and orangethroat darter. These are county-wide records, so not all of them will be in this water. Billsbach Lake responds to conditions more than to tactics.
Climate records put July near 75°F and January near 22°F. Winter shuts the surface down for months. The lid usually goes in mid March, which opens the strongest weeks of the year. Climate averages put the opening at about mid March and the closing near late December. May into June fishes hardest, and September gives a second good stretch before the lid returns. Billsbach Lake runs to its own calendar within the local pattern.
Public data does not answer the access question here. Chautauqua National Wildlife Refuge - Billsbach Unit runs up to the bank here, which usually means extra restrictions. A small crankbait along the drop and a worm in the thick stuff cover the bass. Where access is informal, keep it that way by behaving. Check whether bait restrictions apply before you buy any. If the gate is shut, Whitney Lake at 1.4 miles is the nearest alternative. What applies at Billsbach Lake may have changed since it was mapped.
