Soft grey light all day today, with a decent WSW wind working the banks and the barometer heading up. The productive water at White Goat Lake will be around shallow cover and weed edges. Block out the hours from night into morning. Cover water early, then settle where the signs are. Falling temperatures are switching fish back on.

Set in Custer County, Idaho, this is White Goat Lake. It stands 8,829 feet above sea level. Surface area runs to about 10 acres — small enough to read in one session. Compared with other Idaho water on our list, it sits high. Start from Challis, 18 miles down the road. After that come Salmon at 40 miles and Sun Valley at 71 miles. It sits well inside the county, so one set of rules covers it.
Depth is not on record here, so the bank has to tell you. The productive water is a rod length or two out, not a hundred. A soft bed grows weed late into autumn, which keeps fish shallow. Public occurrence data for Custer County names rainbow trout, cutthroat trout, Chinook salmon, sockeye salmon and Arctic grayling. Protected fish appear in the records for this area, so treat the list as information, not an invitation. On White Goat Lake the first feature you find is usually worth a session.
July is the warm end of the year here, averaging about 54°F, while December sits near 18°F. Winter shuts the surface down for months. After mid May the shallows warm and the fish move up. From about mid May to around mid November, expect open water on the long-run figures. September and October fish steadily right up to the freeze. On White Goat Lake the same rules apply, with local timing.
The access position is unclear from public sources. Mapping is blank for access, so scout the approach before committing the car. Light line and small metal for the trout; a fly rod earns its place on calm evenings. Parking space is the usual limit rather than the bank itself. Access can change hands, so last year's answer may not hold. Spruce Gulch Lake, 8.7 miles away, makes the obvious fallback. Check the position on White Goat Lake before loading the car.
