Stars out and no cloud tonight, with a light chop building from the SSW and pressure on the rise. Whatever swims in Lower Bear Lake should be near reed fringes and open pockets. A broad window opens from the day. Commit to the pattern once the first fish shows. Autumn rewards covering water while the fish roam.

Lower Bear Lake lies within the bounds of Idaho County, Idaho. What surrounds it is rolling bush. About 3 acres of surface, which puts the far bank inside easy sight. Most waters listed here for Idaho County are larger. Hamilton sits 18 miles from the bank. Further out sit Stevensville (34 miles) and Lolo (49 miles). Rules here are straightforward: one county, one set of rules.
Depth here is unknown, so count the lead down before committing. On a natural lake the weed line and the shelf beyond it do the work. Still water like this holds fish on the edges rather than out in the open. Public occurrence data for Idaho County names rainbow trout, Chinook salmon, cutthroat trout, bull trout and brook trout. Several of these carry legal protection or closed seasons; the rulebook comes before the rod. Take Lower Bear Lake a stretch at a time.
August runs about 55°F on average, December about 17°F. Winter closes the water for a while, and the reopening is worth catching. Expect a solid lid for months and a thaw around early May. Expect the water usable from around early May until roughly mid November. Early summer and early autumn carry the open-water season. Keep it in mind when planning a trip to Lower Bear Lake.
Whether the bank is open is not something our records settle. Parking is not close: half a mile from the bank, and no nearer option is mapped. Mapping shows a campsite some half a mile from the water. Toilets are 0.9 miles away, which matters on a long session. A landowner's word beats anything printed elsewhere. Signs go up and come down, so check on the day. If the gate is shut, Upper Bear Lake at 0.9 miles is the nearest alternative. Check the current arrangement for Lower Bear Lake.
